CED has been implementing the NGO Capacity Building Programme on Social Marketing of Condoms which has been supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through Voluntary Health Services (VHS) – Aids Prevention And Control Project (APAC), Chennai. The NGO intervention staff have been equipped with knowledge and skill to effectively address the condom related issues through the training programme. Around 1200 NGO intervention staff have been trained over a period of 8 years through a Five day training programme in the condom intervention strategies. |

CED has also trained the Women Self Help Group (SHG) leaders on the STI/HIV/AIDS awareness and social marketing of condoms through a one day programme. Around 1400 Women SHG Leaders have been trained by CED over the past 4 years. |

As an innovative strategy to provide HIV / AIDS Awareness to the public, a mass awareness programme has been designed by USAID-APAC and implemented by CED in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu. A vehicle which was designed in a condom shape contains the HIV/AIDS awareness materials in the form of slides. The body of the vehicle has two doors for the entry and exit of the viewing public. The vehicle is popularly known as ‘Communication on Wheels. The response from the public and also target group is quite encouraging. The additional objectives of the vehicle is to encourage the non-traditional outlet (other than the medical shops) to stock and sell condoms. |

During the current year 2009 – 2010, the vehicle is operating on the Madurai – Karur Highway benefiting the truckers and Drivers as well as public. An innovative strategy of showing education films and street plays in the evenings through a specially erected stage adjacent to the vehicle is attracting and benefiting the bridge population. |
